Brautigam struck again for the Hookers, taking a pass
from Ken Barbour for his second goal of the night at
7:05. Ross Nenton took advantage of a failed clearing
attempt to score the Hawks' second goal with just 13
seconds left in the period to send the clubs to intermission
with the Hookers leading 4-2.
The "Crazy Legs" line of Barbour, Kevin Bowman,
and Heckman got things going at the beginning of the
second period for the Hookers. Moments after the opening
face-off, Heckman broke into the Hawks zone on a two-on-one
with Bowman. After drawing the defender, Heckman pushed
the puck across to Bowman who slammed it into the net
past Katz at 19:47. Reed tallied another solo strike
at 15:32. Then Barbour took a pass from Heckman for
his fifth goal in five games at 14:13 to make it 6-2
in favor of the Hookers.
Just as it looked like the game might turn into a blow-out,
the Hookers started taking penalties. Brautigam was
first to the sin bin after being nabbed for holding
at 10:02. Bailey followed at 5:13 after getting caught
for a high stick. The Hookers killed both penalties,
but playing a man-down disrupted their lines and broke
their momentum. This allowed the Hawks to grab a goal
back at 1:42 when Stan Polozov's shot evaded goalie
Sean Clark.
Holding a 6-3 lead, the Hookers got their lines in order
after the second intermission. Defender Josh Hoover
kick-started the offense when he broke across the blue
line and ripped a laser shot from the top of the circle
that beat Katz cleanly high on the stick side at 14:13.
But the Hawks bounced back to generate some offense
of their own. Clark, who made several big saves in the
second period with the Hookers shorthanded, proved it
is sometimes better to be lucky than good when he saw
two shots bounce off posts in a span of about five minutes.
Clark's luck ran out when Dotty Hawkins capitalized
on extended pressure with a goal at 11:23. Any thoughts
of a Hawks comeback were thrwarted at 7:31 when Reed
scored his third goal of the game and team-leading 15th
of the season with help from Barbour. Leading 9-4 the
Hookers got sloppy and started taking penalties again.
Barbour went to the box at 3:49 for tripping. Brautigam
followed a minute later for hooking to put the Hookers
two men down.
The Hookers killed the first penalty, but Landon Hines
scored for the Hawks seconds after Barbour left the
box. Had they scored four seconds sooner, the Hawks
would have continued on the powerplay. But since Barbour's
penalty ended before the goal, the Hookers got Brautigam
back.
With less than two minutes to play, the Hookers played
it safe by dumping the puck. But Nenton managed one
more goal for the Hawks with just ten ticks on the clock
to end the game 9-6 in favor of the Hookers.
Notes: Despite giving up six goals,
Clark looked strong in net for the Hookers as he improved
his record to 3-3. The big Ho snuffed a break-away and
covered several point-blank shots in the second period
while the Hookers were shorthanded. Brautigam's two
penalties give him 22 minutes of contrition for the
season, increasing his team lead by more than a dozen.
Brautigam sat 58 minutes in 2006 to lead the club before
Paul Kasztelan opened the gates of Hell with 168 minutes
in 2007. "Crazy Legs" wingmen 12 Heckman and
21 Barbour contriubted six points scoring a goal and
five assists. Add center Bowmans goal and you have lucky
seven.
Hookers Douse Fire
Barbour and Capobianco Lead Hookers
in OT Thriller
November 11, 2008 - The Las Vegas Hookers overcame questionable
officiating and used an overtime shoot-out to defeat
the Fire 6-5 in a Monday night match-up of the division's
top two clubs. Ken Barbour scored two goals in regulation
and once in the shoot-out while Keith Capobianco scored
the game winner to lead the Hookers.
The Hookers got on the board first when Barbour took
a pass from Tim Mitchell and beat Fire goalie G.P. Ginsippee
at 16:58. Getting the first goal was part of the Hookers'
game plan along with shutting down high-scoring Fire
forward Mike Sullivan who had a hand in four of the
five goals that beat the Hookers in their previous meeting.
Both strategies appeared to be working, but sometimes
when you shut one door another opens. That was the case
when Pete Riccardio scored to even the game for the
Fire at 9:16. Riccardio scored twice in the clubs' first
meeting and did so again in this match. With traffic
in front of the net and goalie Gianno Buonaguro covering
low with his paddle-down, Riccardio found a hole for
the go-ahead goal at 3:47.
The Hookers regrouped during the intermission and came
out flying to start the second period. They evened the
score when Chris Heckman drew the defense to him before
dishing the puck across to Barbour for his second goal
of the evening at 18:05 of the second period. After
the face-off at center ice, the next line out for the
Hookers kept the momentum. Rob Sayer carried the puck
into the zone then hit Capobianco with a pass that he
ripped past Ginsippee at 17:05 to make it 3-2 in favor
of the Hookers. Then things took a turn for the surreal.
Referee Shane Resmon, whose questionable calls the previous
Monday kept the Underdogs in a game against the Hookers
that should have been a blow-out, whistled a holding
call against Capobianco where there was clearly no foul.
When Hookers coach Tom Brown asked from the bench, "What's
the call?" Resmon suddenly snapped and threatened
to eject him. The Hookers killed all but four seconds
of the penalty before Chris Crotty scored to even the
game for the Fire at 9:10.
The Hookers bounced back and three minutes Mike Reed
nearly scored by digging a puck loose next to the Fire
net. But a pile-up ensued with Reed getting hit from
behind by a Fire defender. Hookers captain Patrick Bailey
pushed the Fire player off Reed before referee Resmon
finally whistled the play dead. The Fire's instigator
was called for roughing, but both Bailey and Reed were
sent to the box as well. This came as a surprise to
everyone including the Fire who initially thought the
double call was against them and dutifully sent two
men to the box.
The Hookers managed to kill the penalty, but saw a chance
for a powerplay of their own go by the wayside when
Heckman broke into the Fire zone and was pulled down
from behind, only to have Resmon call coincidental minors
based on his view that the Hooker had somehow managed
to hold the Fire defender while being tripped from behind.
Once again the Hookers killed the penalty, but playing
short most of the period caught up with them, resulting
in a Fire goal by Dana Ross with just 45 seconds left.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the third period, the Hookers
determined to remain calm despite the uneven officiating.
Their focus paid off at 13:16 when Josh Fender ripped
a John Rauch rebound into the middle of the net to tie
the game. Minutes later, Sullivan broke into the Hookers
zone on a break, chased by defender Tim Mitchell. The
big Hooker closed the gap and kept Sullivan out on the
wing before getting his stick under the Fire forward's
twig to dislodge the puck with a good, clean defensive
play. But Resmon, trailing the play at center ice, had
already made up his mind to call a hooking penalty before
the play was made. With Mitchell scratching his head
in the box, Crotty scored the go-ahead goal for the
Fire at 8:47.
The Hookers finally got a powerplay of their own when
Heckman was once again pulled down from behind on a
break down the Fire's right wing. With Adam Riccardio
off for slashing, the Hookers powerplay put on a show,
patiently working the puck around the Fire zone before
Sayer tied the game for the Hookers at 4:06 with assists
from Reed and Mitchell.
The teams exchanged chances before regulation ran out
and the match headed for a shoot-out. The Hookers sent
their hot-hand, Barbour, out first and the nouveau Hooker
didn't disappoint. Barbour swooped in from the right
before cutting left and snapping the puck past Ginisippe.
Crotty went next for the Fire, but Buonaguro snuffed
his shot. Reed took the Hookers' second shot, but saw
his attempt snapped up by Ginisippee's glove. Pete Riccardio's
next shot for the Fire went wide, setting up Capobianco's
attempt for the Hookers. The Hookers' center dashed
down the middle of the ice before ripping a shot through
Ginisippee to win the game for the Hookers.
Notes: Sayer's game tying goal was
his team-leading third powerplay tally of the season.
Capobianco's game winner was his second, also a team
best. Capobianco leads the club in scoring with 13 goals
and 24 points. Barbour has four goals in as many games.
Buonaguro shelved his damaged "New Yorker"
mask in favor of one given to him by Rangers star Mike
Richter. The Hookers return to action Thursday night
against the Hawks. Sean Clark will be in goal for the
Hookers.
